About Eliza Fraser

This lodge borrows its name from Eliza Fraser. An integral part of Fraser Island history, she is thought to have shipwrecked with her husband, Captain James Fraser.

Named after the couple, the island served as a refuge for Eliza and James Fraser until the captain’s death, either from his injuries or from starvation. According to Eliza Fraser’s records, she was captured by the Badtjala tribe.

However, this theory remained wildly contested by the other survivors of the shipwreck. Because of Eliza Fraser’s claims, the tribe was eventually massacred by colonizers. Eliza was eventually found and rescued.
